A Real Choice, and Thanks
Posted: Feb 3

Congratulations to Tom Morrison on his victory in the Republican primary. Tom and I will present the voters with a real choice between our different ideas of how to solve the problems Illinois faces. I’m looking forward to a spirited debate.

We should all give thanks to Representative Suzie Bassi for her years of service to the voters of our district. Whether or not you agreed with her, she always did what she thought was right. I hope to carry on that tradition of independence and honesty.

Flamm Opposes “Highway Robbery”
Posted: Dec 29

Palatine resident Matt Flamm, a candidate for State Representative in the 54th Legislative District, has announced his opposition to an attempt by Palatine Township Highway Commissioner John Powers to raise his real estate tax levy by more than $200,000. Flamm made a statement at the Palatine Township Board’s public hearing on Powers’ proposed tax levy on Monday, December 21st.

“In these difficult times, the voters of Palatine Township don’t need a tax increase,” Flamm said. “What they do need is for Commissioner Powers to stop wasting their money.”

Powers claimed he is requesting the maximum amount possible because other taxing districts do so and because he knows the County Clerk will limit the tax increase to the rate of inflation. “That’s not a good reason to raise taxes, especially in this economic downturn when so many residents are suffering,” Flamm said.

Flamm, who ran against Powers in 2005, asked the following questions at the meeting:

  • Why Powers continues to employ four full-time drivers and one part-time driver when there are fewer than 18 miles of road in unincorporated Palatine Township.

  • Why Powers gave a 10% raise to a driver who had worked for the Road District for only two years.

  • Why Powers pays more than $50,000 per year in overtime to drivers when snowplowing is needed, instead of letting them go home earlier on other days to save taxpayers money.

  • Why the Road District spends nearly $2 million annually despite the reduction in the mileage of roads in the unincorporated parts of the township.

  • Why Powers has not explored the option of contracting with the Village of Palatine and other municipalities in the township to take over maintenance of the unincorporated roads at a lower cost to taxpayers.

  • If elected to the Illinois State House of Representatives, Flamm will propose legislation that will require road districts to explore the option of contracting services to municipalities where this would save the taxpayers money. He is the only Democrat running for the seat next November.

Flamm says, “To borrow a phrase from President Obama, I’m not against all tax increases—I’m against dumb and unnecessary tax increases like this one.”
